Compact, electric and surprising: here is the XEV YoYo from €16,990

The XEV YoYo presents itself as an innovative proposal in the electric minicar segment, with a modern design and surprising features for the category. Produced in China, this small car is approved as a heavy quadricycle according to the Italian highway code, i.e. a vehicle with power less than 15 kW and a maximum speed of 80 km/h. To drive it, you need at least a B1 license, making it more versatile than light quadricycles, which do not exceed 45 km/h and can be driven from age 14.
Distinctive design and unexpected comfort
Compact but aggressive, the YoYo is reminiscent in some ways of the first Smarts, while standing out thanks to its geometric shapes and well-finished details. The large doors with an octagonal profile, the steeply inclined windshield that offers excellent visibility and the C-shaped LED lights along the side contribute to making it immediately recognizable.
Despite its compact size, the interior is surprisingly well equipped. The equipment includes keyless door opening, electric windows, electrically adjustable mirrors and even air conditioning, although basic and without temperature and air flow direction adjustments. The seats with integrated headrests are comfortable, and the driver’s seat is also height-adjustable.
Simple but effective technology
The dashboard features a 7-inch central display that acts as a digital dashboard. There is no traditional radio, but you can connect your smartphone via Bluetooth, using it for music and calls, with the convenience of a dedicated support. There are three USB ports for charging devices.
To shift from forward to reverse, a convenient knob is located in the center tunnel. The doors are equipped with roomy pockets, although the presence of elastic cords instead of rigid compartments can cause smaller objects to fall out while driving.
The trunk has a capacity of 180 liters and is separated from the passenger compartment. By folding down the backrest of the passenger seat, the space can be increased, improving the practicality for small transports.
City performance and fast charging
The XEV YoYo is powered by a 10.3 kWh battery. During our urban test it achieved a range of 156 km, a remarkable result considering the environment for which it is designed. Charging can take place from a normal household socket – the cable is included – or from an AC column, using an optional cable. The time required to go from 30% to 100% charge is about four hours.
In the city, comfort is good and the response to departure is prompt. The presence of ABS improves safety when braking, especially in the rain. Handling is one of the vehicle’s strong points: with a short length and light steering, the car can reverse in less than 8 meters.
Versions and customization
The YoYo comes in a range of very bright colours, often with a contrasting side band that enhances its dynamic look. More sober colors are also available for those who prefer a more discreet style.
